The adage: "Go West, young man, Go West" should be amended to recommend to the far west to Lake Havasu City Arizona. This region is rightly known as the seaside resort town of Arizona. The majestic Colorado River, at this point in its journey 1400 miles, has been dammed to form Lake Havasu with a large 25,000 hectares. The rapid growth in Lake Havasu City is a continental zone, plus an artificial island, formed by the dredging of a stagnant stream and convert it into an integralpart of the lake or river.
We first visited Lake Havasu City about 1999 and, by way of confession, not very impressed. Maybe we were not looking pretty. But in 2008, through visits and other resources, we have seen first hand what a thriving little metropolis.
Lake Havasu City was founded in 1962 as a work of industrial and visionary Robert McCulloch (1911-1977). The lake dates back to 1930, when Parker Dam was used to control the Colorado River inparties.
One talking point of the city is that it bridges transferred to the U.S., Lock, Stock and stone, from London in 1968-1971 functions. Since the authorities in London have decided to auction their sinking London Bridge, McCulloch had the idea to bid on it and the resurrection of the original stones in Lake Havasu. The project has cost about $ 7 million, most of all made of stone transport.
Of course, only seemed to walk on London Bridge rebuiltin Arizona. On the side of the city, under the bridge, is a rural area known as the English village, with London Bridge Hotel. We enjoyed walking and window shopping.
As you would expect, the city's main source of income is tourism. However, with 8 boat manufacturers with a presence in the neighborhood, the area is known for its range of boats as well as the annual races and competitions to showcase their latest products. It has the title correctly, watercraft Capital of the World, andhosted the annual International Jet Sports Boat Association (IJSBA) World Finals since 1982. From our hotel room balcony, we enjoyed seeing many of the other watercraft.
Fishing, paddle boats, canoeing, kayaking, parasailing, windsurfing, diving and sailing are also available. What is beautiful is capable of all the necessary equipment for an hour, half day or full day rental. This area is becoming a destination of choice for water sports in the south-west.
country lovers needdo not get bored. There is plenty to do within a considerable amount of public shoreline, all within the city limits. This area includes London Bridge Beach Rotary Beach Park and Windsor Beach. In addition to public beaches and miles of shoreline, Lake Havasu State Park also offers camping, 138 boat in campsites. We were able to enjoy just walking through the parks.
Golfers are not left beaten, as Lake Havasu City is made up of five distinctly different golf courses. Are aimed at golfersall levels of expertise. In addition, they have more courses in the program. Since they are not golfers, we can not experience first-hand.
One aspect of the region that struck us was the commitment of the people and the city for activities throughout the year to maintain a lively, attractive. Voluntary organizations and the construction of local parks to keep up with improvements.
During a visit in February, we came to the Winter Festival. We have seenstand about 250 participants and 35-50K for a body, food crafts, demos, and related sites, along a closed Main Street. It had been years since we attended a traditional cuisine. Walking up and down Main, we discovered that the local color and history major suppliers added to our excursion.
Combined with a week or so later, Winter Blast, an annual convention of manufacturers of fireworks, planned. Provides an annual exhibition of recent innovations in their field. It culminates in a large, freefireworks. Winter Blast is something we all want to see on Saturday after President's Day. This event has been described by some, with much enthusiasm, we will try to participate next year.
After the festival, we checked in Arizona only all-beachfront resort, the Nautical Inn http://www.nauticalinn.com. Its 139 beaches and lake view accommodations offer a relaxing atmosphere.
That evening we went a mile Island Mall & Brewery and enjoyed aexcellent dinner at Shugrue's Restaurant & Bar http://www.shugrues.com. We enjoyed the man-sized portions of steak and halibut, creamed baby spinach, and stuffed baked potatoes, topped with bananas foster for two. Our young waiter, son of the head chef, told us in the last two selections. When you check to see if we were happy with this new innovative dishes, he did not realize that for us, brought back memories of the '60s and '70s.
We were fortunate to have the next morningJared Lyman's Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) http://www.golakehavasu.com give us a tour of the city and surrounding areas. Many parks in the city are easily accessible and well maintained. Jared took us out of town for a visit by members of the Chamber are to expand and improve. To hear him describe how long the posts of stone leads his team and forge a number of routes, on foot, led us to appreciate.
We were surprised to learn that, accordingDr. Michael Rourke, a member of the Faculty of Life Sciences Mohave Community College, "There are more than 300 species of birds [water] is Lake Havasu their home or use it as a stage in their migration route." Most are at the end of September and late spring. Some good sites to see in Mesquite Bay, South Dike Road, Bill Williams Refuge, Parker Dam, and the AHA Khav Preserve. We were surprised by the number of species that we observed.
After a morning walk, lunchJavelin's Mexican Restaurant http://www.javelinacantina.com/, we found their fajitas with an outstanding choice.
We were alone after dinner and decided to an unforgettable boat trip on the lake in the Dixie Belle. Sailing from the English village of dock next to London Bridge, the narrated tour was exceptional. We saw all the lights around the lake.
The closest you can get to experience what it was on a boat on the Colorado River with areplicated one (driven by two engines instead of inboard power has always existed between 1852-1909 Cottonwood). At that point, the Colorado River could be sailed non-stop with a dredge, barge, or log.
The Dixie Belle, a ship of 68 tons is 51 + meters in length and carries 122 passengers. One of the current captains, Greg Smith, says the Dixie Belle sternwheeler replica old South Captain Smith was piloting the ship from 2005. In making this visit,it is easy to take a step back in time.
The dinner came around, we were still the content of the meal. So we opted for dessert at Cold Stone. Returning to our room, we enjoyed watching the lights on the lake.
The next morning we wanted to try breakfast at the Café Makai. Located below Shugrue, the Makai was one of our favorite places. There were many more local tourists, and it was easy to see why. We tried the eggs benedict and French toast acclaimed. Our breakfast wasgood, warm, with excellent service and good coffee. We found it very relaxing, while overlooking the lake with a beautiful view of London Bridge.
After breakfast, we went into town for a tour of Lake Havasu City Historical Museum. Very little, it's worth the time to an hour or so to visit.
We opted for a downtown lunch milkshake. Then we went back to The Boat Inn Robert P. Keller meet for an afternoon tour, focusing on lighthouses. InOver London Bridge, Lake Havasu is now 14 lighthouses, modeled on a smaller scale working lighthouses on both the Great Lakes and East Coast. They serve as indicators of lake navigation and attract tourists. Bob is a Lake Havasu City history and character re-enactors who travel to life. He did a tour together for us, but we were particularly interested in how the idea of lighthouses was established. What started as his attempt of a man is aclub and its members try adding a few lights years. His garage is the right club this workshop under way for the club project.
That night we did tours and chose to spend time with friends visiting from Chicago. We picked them up and went to Angelina. This small and intimate Italian restaurant is reasonably priced with well-prepared dishes. It 'was a wonderful end to a wonderful 3-night get-a-way.
Lake Havasu City promotes many annual events including the Havasu ClassicIn April, when the classic cars roll into town. October features Rods and Relics Run To The Sun, with over 1000 cars from 1972 and older. October is also a guest day in London Bridge, which is a holiday for two weeks. November brings the N Chillin 'Brewfest Swilling. In December, the promenade decorated with more than one million Christmas lights. Together with the Festival of Lights, a holiday boat parade is a part of the festivities.
